The Rise of Restocking Fees: How Retailers Are Changing the Returns Game

In our October blog, we discussed the growing trend of restocking fees and their impact on consumers. Now, just a few months later, we’re here to warn you again: restocking fees are on the rise and becoming increasingly common across various industries. As more retailers adopt these fees, it’s crucial for shoppers to stay informed and understand how these policies may affect their purchasing decisions.

The ease of online shopping has brought a surge in product returns, posing a costly challenge for retailers. To combat this, many are introducing restocking fees on unwanted purchases. In 2024, 40% of retailers introduced return fees ranging from $5 to $10, according to Good Morning America. Popular brands such as Zara, H&M, Amazon, Abercrombie & Fitch, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue have all adopted some form of a return fee.

Industry categories such as electronics, furniture, and custom-made products are leading the charge, as these items are often expensive to process and difficult to resell. Some fashion retailers are also adopting restocking fees, with a growing trend for luxury or made-to-order items, to mitigate losses from excessive returns.

Consumers, however, often view restocking fees as a penalty for shopping online, where assessing fit and quality can be challenging. Transparency is key to maintaining trust —a clear communication of return policies and offering tools like virtual try-ons can may also help reduce returns.

Retailers must find balance between protecting their profits with ensuring a positive customer experience. Waiving fees for exchanges for loyal customers, and offering store credit instead of refunds, can soften the impact. While restocking fees may not be universally popular, they represent a practical solution to the growing issue of returns in the evolving retail landscape.
